THE
Swedish MOPED 50 YEARS. 1952
- 2002.
1
July 1952 a law was passed in Sweden that made it possible to
drive a bicycle with help engine without tax, driver license (age
to drive min. 15 years old) or registration.
The
max speed for this "type" of vehicle was set to 30 km/
hour and 0,8hp.
Most
Swedish
manufactures of two wheelers introduced 1952 a special moped (with the engine built-in the frame). This type of vehicle
soon won terrine over the helpengines and in a few years the hulpmotor
was a closed chapter.
In
1954 the customer of a moped could chose of 30 - 40 different
marks of so called "Whole-mopeds" (special
built mopeds), Swedish and foreign.
The
number of mopeds in Sweden where 1953 - 150.000, three years later
an estimation of 400.000 mopeds, this year the population in
Sweden were 7.234.664 persons (18
persons per moped) and 1961 the number of mopeds had risen
to 725.000.
In
Sweden today (2002) there is a quite big interest to drive and
preserve OUR veteranmopeds. A "common" price of an
"Oldtimer" ordinary model is 500-2000 SKr, 100 Swedish Krona = 10.82567 Euro witch is very
reasonable. This makes the hobby of having a veteran moped
to a cheep "very
enjoyable" pleasure.

The
Swedish word "blöjknutte" (napkinbiker), is (was) used
"to/about" someone driving moped, not old enough to drive motorcycle.
Blöja = napkin, nappy, (diaper US) Knutte = guy, biker

The
word MOPED is a combination of the two words: Motor - Pedal.
Some journalists on the Swedish motor magazine MOTOR were
tired of all long descriptions of these types of vehicles
and invented this short word 1952.
Är moped ett
teleskopord, av motorvelociped, vilket påstås i flera
ordböcker. Nej! Det riktiga ursprunget är mo(tor) + ped(al).
Ordet skapades av motorjournalisten Harald Nielsen vid tidningen Motor 1952. På den tiden var det obligatoriskt med pedaler på motordrivna
cyklar.
Det svenska moped har lånats in tyskan, norskan, engelskan
(mo-ped, senare utan bindelsträck), finskan (mopedi),
estniskan(mopeedi). På danska heter det däremot knallert.
